On quiet interiors

Quietness is not the absence of things. It is the presence of fewer, better-chosen ones.
People ask us how to make a room feel calm. The honest answer is that calm is subtractive: you take away the second window treatment, the third material, the extra lamp that was added in case.
What remains has to be good. A quiet room is not forgiving. Every surface is visible, so every surface must earn its place — in proportion, in texture, in the way it takes light at four in the afternoon.
We usually start with three materials and a limit. If a fourth is needed, something else has to go.
