The case for a lower ceiling

11.06.26 / 4 min read

Vaulted, whitewashed room with arched windows and a brick floor

Height is a luxury only when it is used. Often a lower ceiling makes a better room.

We are often asked to raise ceilings. We usually propose the opposite. A room at 2.4 metres feels held; one at 3.2 feels exposed unless it has the plan to carry it.

Where we do go high, we go very high, and we do it once — a single stair hall, a single double-height room — so that the contrast does the work.
